Bobo was a chubby kid when she was young... No no... she was fat. After looking at the comments left after the tag post.... Bobo thinks she should share with everyone.
Bobo was fat. At 1.6m and 75kg her BMI was 27. The largest her waist ever went to was 34 inches at the age of 12. Really. She was in TAF club ( a club in Primary school for obese children.) Everytime she went to family reunions....
Cousin 1: Wah you sure in TAF club right?
Cousin 2: Wah lao you really got no shape le.
Cousin 1: Ya... shapeless
Auntie: Wa BOBO You eating more and more is it?
And on and on and on...
Countless quips about how BObo looked. She had to look for Size 10 white canvas shoes when she was 11, cos her feet were too fat! Bobo remembered how her Mama had to go to Chinatown just to buy her school shoes cos neighbourhood shoe shops and Bata just didn't have that kind of size. She had to wear special ones from China... Ultra wide cut. She also had to get Men's shoes when buying sports shoes. There were no women's shoes for her. Absolutely no size.
It didn't help that Bobo's Jiejie (her sister) had been slim all her life. Jiejie had nice straight hair with no frizzies and was always slim.
Bobo? She was fat, had a whole head of frizzy hair which resembled a broom and was bespectacled since Pri 3. (10 years old) Bobo wasn't the most obese... she knows.... but she was really an introvert that wouldn't speak up... so she bore all the criticisms quietly.
During Chinese New Year, Bobo would try her hardest not to eat the Chinese NEw YEar goodies. And when she did just take one...
Auntie: AIYOH YOU DON'T EAT SO MUCH LA...
It felt horrible. Really.
Nothing made up for it. Even when Bobo did good in examinations, it didn't take away the fat feelings. Even when people praised her for things she did.... it didn't make a difference.
She was fat and ugly.
Then she went to Secondary school, an all girls' school. SHe joined the NPCC, National Police Cadet Corp as an extra activity. There she had to go through physical training, foot drills... Soon she lost about 12kg, weighing 55kg. Just a slightly more active lifestyle...
Then the comments during family reunions start to change... people started to notice me a little more. But the hair was still ugly, the face need to be be remoulded. But she was happy ...
Too happy... then she went overboard.
Soon she began to over-exercise. She would
1) do aerobics every day (1 hour)
2) jogged around the neighbourhood every other day (1 hour)
3) Skip
And she ate less and less... first it was down to two meals... then one... then one meal every two days.
Her meal was a big bowl of fruits... banana, papaya, apple, pear, oranges... usually taken in the morning.
With that much activity and that little intake, the results were fast... More compliments came pouring in and she was motivated to continue.
Then it started to wreck her life...
She started waking up earlier and earlier... cos her stomach was hungry and it kept her sleeping. She only slept 2-3 hours a day.
She started having fuzzy hair all over her body.... and the hair on her head was falling in clumps.
Her stomach was so used to gastric pains that it didn't know when it was having gastric pains all the time.
Bruises refused to heal and her legs were covered with them.
Her skin condition worsened cos there wasn't enough nutrients... the skin peeled or broke out in rashes (protesting).
She became more and more withdrawn, anti-social... becos it began to be very hard to explain why she wasn't eating.
Bobo's lightest? 39kg.
It was horrible. Bobo would never want to go back there.
Finally, thanks to family and her Bestie, with a lot of help and a lot of encouragement, she's back to normal weight - 49kg.
BUt her body? will never be normal again.
These days, her stomach seemed to have shrunk. Just a little food and it's full. Yet just a while later she's hungry.
Her skin never went back to the original state.
She's still on the hairy side.
Her pulse is really weak. In fact, her pulse cannot be felt on the wrist. Only on the neck.
She still can't tell when she has gastric pains.
Just some small tips if you really think you need to lose weight:
1) swop the weightage in meals. Most people skip breakfast, have a heavy lunch and a even heavier dinner. That's wrong. Have a light dinner like soup and biscuits, and a heavy breakfast. If you can take fruits for breakfast even better. Try not to eat anything 3 hours before you sleep at night.
2) Diets don't really work. What will really work is swopping for healthier options. NOT fat-free options which dun taste good but just healthier ones. Like if you like to eat chocolate, then take dark ones with no or less fillings. If you like ice cream then pick those with less fat content.
3) Skipping. It really helps. Try 100 a set, 3-5 sets a day. If you are like Bobo with poor hand-eye coordination, place your arms across your chest and jump with two feet, mimicking skipping. Bobo does this cos she can't coordinate well enough to get over the rope.
4) Drink a lot of water. Plain water... or drinks with low calories.
5) Sleep more. really.
Hope Bobo helped when she shared her story.
Don't go down the same path. It's a lifetime regret.
