Little Incidents in China

Incident Number 1
Well this didn't really happen in China but on the way here really.... Bobo was on this particular flight to China where most of the attendants spoke little English. Well that really isn't such a problem since most of the passengers don't speak English too since this flight was on its way to Beijing. But there was one attendant, the head attendant, who can speak English only.... She was the one Bobo had trouble with.

Head Attendant (HA): Yes Miss can I help you? *switches off Bobo's reading light*
Bobo: HUH? *jumps as her light's off and she couldn't read*
HA: You called? *reaches over and switches off the call light*
Bobo: No.... *irritated*
HA: Ma'am your phone... *noticing the handphone in Bobo's hand*
Bobo: Ya?
HA: Your phone... on flight mode?
Bobo: HAH? *thinking what is flight mode?*
HA: Your phone....... flight mode?
Bobo: *stares at her with a frown*
HA: Errr err Phone cannot. Flight mode.
Bobo: OHHHHHHH *proceeds to turn off her phone*
HA: wait wait.... *walks off and returns with a chinese attendant*
She then starts to explain to the Chinese attendant that she wants Bobo to turn off her phone in her version of "broken" English....
Bobo: I've turned off my phone already. Next time you could just say mobiles phones are not to be used on flight.

The Head Attendant was in shock when Bobo replied in English. Bobo was reading John Grisham's The Innocent Man (in English) and watching Transformers (in English). What did she really expect? Bobo thought that HPs cannot be used during take offs and landings but wasn't sure if they could be used inbetween. She had some problems and wanted to ask her friend in China about them, which led to her switching her hp on. Thus just a simple reminder would suffice. And why did she switch off Bobo's reading light???

After a while, Bobo realised what was happening. The man next to Bobo placed his arm on her armrest pressing the call button... causing the attendants to come. Bobo explained to the attendants about it but nothing was done. So she couldn't be bothered really. What else could she have done?

Incident Number 2

Bobo never had any problems with smokers. She's got nothing against them. She has friends who smoke but they are mostly quite considerate, only lighting up when they are standing pretty far away or if the wind isn't blowing in her direction. In Singapore, people are generally not allowed to smoke in most places but only those designated areas or outside. But now, in China, as Bobo's sitting in the cybercafe, the man just opposite her is lighting up his 5th cigarette. URGH.

Did she mention that the cybercafe is underground and there are no fans, no air conditioning and no other forms of ventilation in this place? it's cold outside and they turned off all that. So Bobo's sitting here, surrounded by cigarette smoke, her lungs all filled with the pesky smelly smoke and her life's probably shortened by 5 years...

*koff koff* please hand the oxygen mask over...

Incident Number 3

Bobo was to head out to lunch with her friend who was at the lobby waiting. She hopped on to the lift on the 20th storey. More people got on along the way and soon the lift was filled. When it opened on the ground floor, the people shoved and pushed their way out... and at the SAME TIME, people from the outside shoved and pushed their way in. Soon Bobo found herself still in the lift, riding up to the 20th floor again, leaving her friends waiting for her on the ground floor.

WHAT THE HELL?!

When Bobo did manage to meet her friend, he gave stern instructions:

1) Forget about being gentlemenly or ladylike
2) If pushed, push back
3) Forget what manners mean.
4) Just do it.

Following these guidelines, Bobo managed her way out the lift the next time. *Phew*

Bobo would like to apologise for the lack of pictures. She's blogging this from a cybercafe (a very smoky one) and she can't upload any of the 289 pictures she's taken so far. She will flood this blog with pictures once she can. Meanwhile... please bear with it.
