How long to travel from Bedok to Airport?

Bobo's Mama was at the airport and overheard some girls who were there to apply for a job at the airport. They were successful and were waiting for confirmation on the transport which was suppose to take them to work (@ the airport) the next day.

Phone ringing...

Girl 1 answered and went
"Hello? Hello? ..... yes yes You're suppose to take me to the airport tomorrow. Yes yes... 3 0'clock? Tomorrow 3 o'clock? But Uncle... I work morning shift. If you pick me up at 3 o'clock, I already finish work leh..... WHAT?! 3 AM?? But I stay in Bedok Reservoir leh... and I start work at 6AM!..."

She hung up and was going to start complaining to her friend when the friend's phone rang...

Girl 2 answered and the conversation went...

"Hello? Yes Uncle... HUH... 3.30 AM? But Uncle I live in Bedok le.... "

For those who don't live in Singapore... the two places in question, namely Bedok and the National Airport are about 12 km apart. And at a normal driving speed of 60km/h, you'll take about 15min to travel direct from Bedok to the Airport. In the wee hours of the morning, you certainly wouldn't be expecting any traffic. Including time wasted stopping at traffic lights for no one in sight, it shouldn't take more than 25 min to reach the airport.

So why 3 hours?

Apparently the reason given behind this was that they were afraid the uncle will get lost.

But Bobo doesn't think that the reason is good enough.

It is the transport company's job to find out and pre-plan the route before the driver has to embark on the trip itself. Moreover he only had to pick up about less than 10 people all living in the same area.

Bobo thinks that the fault doesn't really lie with the driver but the entire system this is going by.

If an employee is paid by the hour (BTW these girls are), they are paid for the time they are actually working. Which means if they are paid $10 for each of the 8 hours they work they will be paid a total of $80 for that day. But the number of hours wasted is 12 + hours, which means they collect less than $7 per hour. It's not quite fair isn't it? Bobo's pretty sure when they agreed to work, they had no idea this would happen.

Ah well but that happens with lots of jobs here right?

Well... Bobo'll just be glad she has a job to ensure there's food on the table.
